Streetwear might not be the first style that springs to mind when you think of summer, since much of the look is centered around things like oversized hoodies, thick joggers, denim jeans and puffy coats. However, it’s important to remember that ‘streetwear’ is a melting pot of all different kinds of influences rather than one distinct look.
It takes inspiration from hip hop, surf culture, sportswear and fitness fashion, punk, skateboarding and even high fashion.
This means it’s a highly adaptable type of fashion and can definitely be made to work over the warmer months. Here are some of the ways you can wear streetwear during the summer.
Shorts
Shorts are a summer staple, and there are plenty of streetwear inspired shorts. Sporty
shorts, cargo shorts, denim, cycling or even chino shorts can all fit the style depending on what else you wear or accessories them with.
If you get yourself a couple of pairs of shorts this will provide the basis for your summer streetwear outfits so go with what you like, what’s comfortable and what looks good on you.
Oversized Tees
Baggy and oversized clothing is the hallmark of streetwear. But instead of an oversized puffer jacket, go with an oversized tee- not only is this comfy but it’s perfect for the summer. They’ll allow you to keep cool while still keeping the sun off your shoulders and you can pair them with joggers, jeans or shorts.
There are all kinds of styles to choose from that will fit the streetwear aesthetic, from simple logo tees to graphic and printed designs. Some cycling shorts and a baggy t-shirt is a fantastic summer staple outfit that can easily be styled to fit a streetwear look.
Sneakers
When it comes to footwear, sneakers are fantastic all-rounders to wear with streetwear (and in general!) If you want to keep your streetwear look more feminine, start with some white sneakers for women and something like a shirt dress or denim skirt with a graphic tee. White sneakers are also the perfect option for men too and will work with pretty much anything else you’re styling them with.
Accessories
A lot of streetwear features things like beanies, gloves and chunky jackets which aren’t really suitable for summer.
But there are plenty of things you can style your outfits with to give them more of a streetwear vibe. Trendy urban sunglasses, bags and jewelry from your favourite streetwear brands and things like chain belts or backwards baseball caps are all examples.
These can help take an outfit from good to great, they can style a simple outfit and take it more in the direction that you want to achieve. For example, maybe you want to give your outfit more of a skater vibe or a hip-hop feel.
Accessories give you the option to style your clothing pieces in different ways too, so you get more for your money. How would you wear streetwear over the summer? Is this a look you ever gravitate towards over the warmer months?
