Fashion Silhouettes Timeline

 1938-1939

Fashion Silhouettes Timeline Drawings 1938 to 1939

For this webpage I have drawn a variety of late 1930's shapes capturing the elements of silhouettes found in old magazines such as Le Petit Echo de la Mode, Butterick and McCall's pattern books of the day.  Costume drawings, magazine covers and fashion plates of 1938 and 1939 all equally act as a source of inspiration for making your own drawings.  I have redrawn them in my own style then finally enhanced elements with computer software.  These silhouette costume drawings show just some of the body shape outlines found between 1938 and 1939 creating costume history detail which also makes them very useful when dating the line of vintage dress.

Like many costume enthusiasts, I sometimes need a basic costume history line image for a specific year.  These 1930's fashion illustrations should give you a clear understanding of the changing lines and variety of silhouettes.  As a result you can date a picture within a few years.  Each thumbnail enlarges to produce an A4 print and is suitable for colouring in and producing timeline scenes, collage foundation guides or guidelines for amateur dramatics.

In 1938 styles still had a softness about them and bias cutting was still used.  As war approached garments took on a more business like air.  On this page look out for dresses rising hemlines and a waistline seam with a belt.  Puffed sleeve heads and yoke inserts which heralded the clever cutting that was to come which would make use of every scrap of fabric.  Note the small inverted pleats in skirts which can be made quite economically whilst retaining style lines.

My original detailed text information on the 1930s can be found in the main section on the Stylish Thirties.  You may also be interested in the link to Utility Clothing.
