Costume Silhouettes 1930s

By Pauline Weston Thomas for Fashion-Era.com

Fashion Silhouettes Timeline Drawings

The fashion history era between 1930 and 1932 is one which shows a new line, a new silhouette. I have studied costume drawings and fashion plates of the thirties and then I have redrawn them in my own style. After I made these simple line drawings I finally enhanced aspects such as patterns with computer software.

On this page the costume silhouette drawings show just some of the fashion history silhouette body shape outlines between 1930-32.  Each thumbnail enlarges to produce an A4 print and is suitable for colouring in and producing timeline scenes, collage foundation guides or guidelines for amateur dramatics.

Like many costume enthusiasts, I sometimes need a basic costume history line image for a specific year.  These fashion images should give you a clear understanding of the changing lines and variety of silhouettes.  As a result you can date a picture within a few years of costume history.

On this page look out for the waist returning to its natural position for the first time in more than a decade, plus increasing skirt lengths and bias cut garments.  Clothes are more formal in cut again and use pleats, godets, and short angel bell sleeves, circular cut flute ruffles.

Emphasis is on clinging fabrics moulding round the hips.  Flowing loose trousers make a real alternative as casual resort wear through the 1930s.  In general terms the decade of the 1930s is considered a very stylish one.  More detailed information on the 1930s can be found in the main section on the Stylish Thirties.
